Introduction

The All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), the Pentagon office responsible for investigating unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP), has reviewed some of the most persistent claims that governments possess recovered alien spacecraft or have secretly reverse-engineered extraterrestrial technology. Its central finding was that it found no verified evidence of extraterrestrial hardware, recovered “off-world” craft, or confirmed UAP cases representing alien technology.[U.S. Department of War]media.defense.govAARO Historical Record Report VolU.S. Department of WarAARO Historical Record Report Volume 1March 9, 2024…Published: March 9, 2024

This conclusion does not mean every UAP report has been explained. Instead, AARO’s review focused on a narrower scientific and evidential question: whether available records, materials, investigations and government programmes support the extraordinary claim that non-human technology has been recovered or studied. The office found that the evidence did not meet that standard.[U.S. Department of War]media.defense.govAARO Historical Record Report VolU.S. Department of WarAARO Historical Record Report Volume 1March 9, 2024…Published: March 9, 2024

Reviewing government records

AARO’s Historical Record Report, Volume I, examined US government involvement with UAP from 1945 onwards, including previous investigations, alleged crash-retrieval stories, claims of hidden programmes and accusations that recovered materials had been analysed for reverse engineering. The review was created after Congress directed the Department of Defense to examine the historical record of UAP-related activity.[Disclosure Archives]disclosurearchives.comDisclosure ArchivesAARO releases Historical Record Report, Volume I · Disclosure ArchivesMarch 8, 2024…Published: March 8, 2024

The report’s main finding was that no US government investigation, academic study or official review had confirmed a UAP sighting as extraterrestrial technology. AARO also stated that it found no empirical evidence supporting claims that the US government or private companies had recovered and exploited alien spacecraft.[U.S. Department of War]media.defense.govAARO Historical Record Report VolU.S. Department of WarAARO Historical Record Report Volume 1March 9, 2024…Published: March 9, 2024

A key part of the review involved separating genuine classified aerospace activity from claims of alien technology. AARO found that some historical UAP stories were likely influenced by real but secret programmes, where advanced aircraft or surveillance projects were mistaken for something beyond human capability. The report argued that secrecy surrounding military technology created conditions where speculation could grow around unexplained sightings.[U.S. Department of War]media.defense.govAARO Historical Record Report VolU.S. Department of WarAARO Historical Record Report Volume 1March 9, 2024…Published: March 9, 2024

The review also examined allegations of hidden reverse-engineering efforts. According to AARO, several claimed programmes were either not real, were misunderstood versions of legitimate defence projects, or involved proposals that never became operational programmes.[UAP Records Archive]uap-archive.orgUAP Records ArchiveAARO Report on the Historical Record of U.S. Government Involvement with UAP, Volume I | UAP Records ArchiveFebruary 1…

Claims versus verified evidence

The strongest claims about alien technology generally involve three ideas: recovered spacecraft, unusual materials, and secret engineering programmes. AARO’s review tested these claims against the type of evidence scientists would normally require: documented provenance, independent analysis, repeatable measurements and clear links between a material or object and a non-human origin.

One frequently discussed example involved a metal sample claimed by some investigators to have come from an extraterrestrial craft. AARO examined the material and concluded that it was a manufactured, terrestrial alloy with ordinary characteristics rather than a substance showing evidence of non-human manufacture. The office identified the sample as primarily consisting of magnesium, zinc and bismuth, with other trace elements.[UAP Records Archive]uap-archive.orgUAP Records ArchiveAARO Report on the Historical Record of U.S. Government Involvement with UAP, Volume I | UAP Records ArchiveFebruary 1…

This distinction is important because unusual appearance is not the same as unusual origin. Materials science often finds unexpected structures, unusual manufacturing techniques or uncommon alloys created by human industry. To demonstrate alien technology, researchers would need evidence showing that a material could not reasonably have been produced by human processes and that it was connected to an extraterrestrial source. AARO concluded that the reviewed materials did not meet that threshold.[U.S. Department of War]media.defense.govAARO Historical Record Report VolU.S. Department of WarAARO Historical Record Report Volume 1March 9, 2024…Published: March 9, 2024

Claims of recovered craft face a similar evidence problem. A report from a witness, even if made in good faith, does not by itself establish that an object was extraterrestrial. Scientific evaluation requires physical access, reliable records of where an object came from, and independent verification. NASA’s UAP study reached a related conclusion: the limited number of high-quality observations currently available makes firm scientific conclusions about UAP origins impossible.[NASA]nasa.govUPDATE: NASA Shares UAP Independent Study Report; Names DirectorUPDATE: NASA Shares UAP Independent Study Report; Names Director - NASASeptember 14, 2023…Published: September 14, 2023

The broader scientific issue is that unidentified does not automatically mean unknown technology. An object can remain unidentified because of incomplete sensor data, poor viewing conditions, missing context or limited information. NASA has noted that many UAP reports lack the detailed measurements needed for rigorous analysis.[NASA Science]science.nasa.govScience UAP FAQsNASA ScienceUAP FAQs - NASA ScienceMay 8, 2026…Published: May 8, 2026

Why unresolved cases remain open

AARO’s finding of no confirmed alien technology does not eliminate all unresolved UAP reports. Some cases remain open because investigators do not yet have enough information to determine what occurred. The remaining uncertainty usually reflects limitations in data rather than positive evidence for extraterrestrial engineering.[NASA Science]science.nasa.govScience UAP FAQsNASA ScienceUAP FAQs - NASA ScienceMay 8, 2026…Published: May 8, 2026

The difference between “unresolved” and “extraterrestrial” is central to scientific evaluation. A radar track, pilot observation or video recording may show something unusual, but determining whether it represents a new technology requires additional evidence. Investigators must consider possibilities such as sensor limitations, atmospheric effects, ordinary aircraft, balloons, drones or classified human systems before concluding that a phenomenon represents something fundamentally new.

AARO’s later reporting continued this evidence-based approach. Its annual UAP reviews have found that resolved cases generally correspond to ordinary objects and phenomena, including balloons, satellites, aircraft and unmanned systems, while unresolved cases often remain open because available data is insufficient.[New Paradigm Institute]newparadigminstitute.orgNew Paradigm Instituteaaro fy24 consolidated report – New Paradigm InstituteNovember 14, 2024…Published: November 14, 2024

This approach places AARO’s work within the wider scientific method: extraordinary claims require evidence that can distinguish them from more ordinary explanations. In the context of UFO reports and science fiction, the idea of recovered alien technology remains a powerful cultural theme, but AARO’s review found that current government records do not provide verified evidence that such technology exists.[U.S. Department of War]media.defense.govAARO Historical Record Report VolU.S. Department of WarAARO Historical Record Report Volume 1March 9, 2024…Published: March 9, 2024

The unresolved nature of some UAP cases keeps scientific investigation worthwhile, but the evidence currently supports caution rather than a conclusion that humanity has acquired extraterrestrial machines. The main challenge for future research is therefore improving the quality of observations, measurements and physical evidence rather than assuming an alien explanation for unexplained events.[NASA Science]science.nasa.govScience UAPNASA ScienceUAP - NASA ScienceFebruary 23, 2026…Published: February 23, 2026
