Introduction

Mathematics is one of science fiction’s most enduring answers to a difficult question: if humans encountered an alien civilisation, what could both sides understand? The idea behind mathematical communication is that numbers, patterns and physical relationships might not depend on human culture or spoken language. A civilisation orbiting another star might not share our biology, history or vocabulary, but it may still recognise repeated structures, quantities and logical relationships. The concept has also influenced real attempts to design messages for possible extraterrestrial intelligence. Why numbers seem universal

The appeal of mathematics as an alien communication bridge comes from its apparent independence from local culture. This approach appears in the broader tradition of UFO-related science fiction because the communication problem is often treated as the real challenge of contact. A spacecraft can arrive, but a meaningful exchange requires some shared framework. Mathematics becomes attractive because it seems less tied to one species’ experiences than art, mythology or language.

A famous real-world example is the Arecibo Message, transmitted in 1974 towards the globular cluster M13. The binary-coded signal was designed to represent information about humans, DNA, Earth and the Solar System, beginning with basic numerical concepts. The most ambitious mathematical communication ideas do not simply send numbers; they attempt to build a complete symbolic system from mathematical foundations. The Arecibo Message and the problem of decoding

The Arecibo Message shows both the promise and difficulty of mathematical communication. Its 1,679 binary digits were arranged so that they could form a visual representation when placed into a particular grid. The design demonstrates an important assumption: an advanced civilisation might recognise mathematics as a way of revealing how to interpret a message. However, the receiver would still need to make several deductions. It would need to recognise that the signal was artificial, identify the correct structure, understand the numerical system and interpret the symbols correctly. These are not purely mathematical problems; they are problems of shared context.

This tension is central to science fiction. A message can be logical without being understandable. Many fictional first-contact stories use mathematical signals not because numbers solve communication completely, but because they reveal how much remains unknown between two minds separated by evolution, environment and culture.

Limits of mathematical communication

Mathematics may offer a foundation for contact, but it does not remove the deeper problem of meaning. Numbers can describe relationships, but they do not automatically explain why those relationships matter. A civilisation might understand a sequence of prime numbers without knowing whether humans intended it as a greeting, a warning, a scientific demonstration or something else.

Researchers in extraterrestrial communication have therefore debated whether mathematics alone is enough. Some approaches combine mathematical structures with images, sounds and information about Earth. The Voyager Golden Record, for example, included symbolic instructions, images, sounds, music and greetings in 55 human languages rather than relying only on mathematics.
