Can Aliens Understand Earth's Message?

Introduction

Building a message for another civilisation

The design challenge facing the Golden Record team was unlike ordinary translation. Starting with physics rather than language

One of the central design choices was to avoid beginning with human speech. Spoken languages are highly dependent on cultural learning, so the record began instead with scientific references. Scientific information could potentially be decoded through shared observation of the universe, but music, language and images depend much more heavily on experience. A mathematical diagram might communicate a measurement, while a piece of music may communicate emotion only to a listener with comparable ways of hearing and interpreting patterns.

The limits of universal communication

The greatest limitation of the Golden Record is that it was built around a hypothetical receiver. The designers could prepare a message, but they could not know whether an alien civilisation would perceive the same categories that humans use. A species with different senses, different concepts of time or different forms of intelligence might not interpret images, sounds or symbols in the intended way.

Images provide a clear example of this problem. The record contains diagrams and photographs, but photographs depend on assumptions about vision and representation. Humans understand that a two-dimensional image can represent a three-dimensional object because of experience with pictures, perspective and visual technology. The same issue applies to the idea of a “universal” language. Science fiction often imagines translation systems that can overcome these barriers, but the Golden Record shows why real communication may be much harder. A message does not only require symbols; it requires a shared framework for assigning meaning to those symbols. The record could indicate that humans exist and that humans communicate, but it could not guarantee understanding.

There is also a practical limitation: discovery itself is extremely unlikely. Voyager is travelling through interstellar space, and NASA notes that it would take around 40,000 years before the spacecraft makes a close approach to another planetary system. The Golden Record was therefore never a conventional broadcast intended for immediate contact. Why the Golden Record remains important for alien communication

This is why the project remains closely connected to science fiction’s exploration of alien communication. Stories about extraterrestrial encounters often ask whether humans can recognise intelligence that does not think like us. The Golden Record approached the same question in a practical form: how can we introduce ourselves when we cannot know what another civilisation understands?

Its final message is therefore both ambitious and limited. Humanity attempted to create a bridge across an unimaginable distance, but the bridge could only be built from human materials: human science, human art, human symbols and human assumptions. The record is a message to possible aliens, but it is also a reflection of how humans imagine communication itself.
